At various times a stagecoach, a boatman's hotel on the Morris Canal, a Post Office, a general store and, finally, a roadhouse tavern, The Stanhope House has had a colorful history. (It's said that Babe Ruth indulged in a glass or two of bathtub gin here during Prohibition.) With the blues revival in the late 1970s and early 1980s, The Stanhope House became a premier venue for live music in New Jersey. Perhaps inevitably, the glory faded, but now, following a major renovation, world-class musical acts have returned to The Stanhope House. This summer's headliners included Steve Forbert, James Cotton and Ralph Stanley, and the autumn lineup features the likes of Grace Potter, Marshall Crenshaw and Leon Russell. And, of course, there's a full menu, from burgers-and-fries to penne with vodka sauce, and, of course, the "legendary" (just ask Babe Ruth) Stanhope House bar is back in full swing!
